Name: Otterheart
Gender: She-Cat
Age: 27 moons
Clan: ReedClan
Rank: Medicine Cat
Strengths:
~~~Perception and intelligence - These go paw-in-paw for her duties as medicine cat. She has trained herself to notice details in her surroundings, and can, for example, easily pick a healing herb out of a group of similar-looking plants that have no healing properties or are poisonous or tell when an herb is ready to be harvested or when it needs to grow more to reach its full effectiveness. She also tends to notice right away when her herbs are starting to dry up and lose their healing power, so she knows the best time go out and gather more herbs.
~~~Swimming - She likely shares this strength with all her clanmates. Otterheart loves playing int he river and is a very strong swimmer. Water is almost as easy as land to her, and she enjoys the fact that she can move in more directions while in the water.
Weaknesses:
~~~Hunting - She's below average in fishing on her best days, only managing to catch one or two slow fish if she's lucky. She can't hunt land prey at all. If she's lucky enough, she can occasionally catch something, but she can't go through with killing it for reasons listed below and ends up either having someone else kill it for her or letting it go.
~~~Empathy - This isn't the psychic power type of empathy like Yellowfang had in the books. It's the sensitivity to emotions that anyone can have, born of Otterheart's heightened perception and the ability to read expressions, body language, and vocal tones. This is what makes it impossible for her to kill land prey. She sees/hears its terror and feels it almost as if it were her own, so she's never able to go through with the kill. She can only do okay with fish because they usually die before she can see their faces and they don't voice their fear. She also has an issue with causing pain, which makes her a very poor fighter. She even struggles with it in her medicine cat duties, as she has to cause pain to set a dislocated limb or tail or treat a very sensitive or deep wound.
Appearance: Thick-furred dark brown tabby she-cat with white markings (front toes, back feet [extending about 1/4 up the legs], tail tip, muzzle, and locket] and green eyes. She's large-ish for a she-cat, has a long thick tail, and her front paws each have an extra toe.
Personality: StarClan honors her spirit and dedication. Despite being poor at the two skills essential to most clan cats, she has managed to remain happy and emotionally strong. She's always there for her clanmates when she can be, and does her best to keep everyone happy and healthy, whether they're facing peace or disaster. Mostly, that's just how she is, but focusing on everyone else also helps her keep her emotions in check (because calming everyone else fast means there's less fear and anger outside of her to influence her, enabling her to treat the injured immediately provided her herb stores are safe). True to her name, she's a very playful creature. This caused problems for her in her apprenticehood but she's since learned how to hold it back until she has free time...mostly. She's still a bit of a clwon, and it's easy for her to get on others' nerves.
Quirks and Other Tidbits:
~~~A lot of times, she can tell when a fish is a mature female (they're wider, because they're full of eggs). This is a trivial thing for most, but it's very important to her. Fish eggs - particualrly the tiny ones that can be crunched - are her absolute favorite food. She will eat the whole piece of fresh-kill even if se somehow ended up with an egg-less fish or if someone brought her something else, but if she's choosing her own food she will pick through the entire fresh-kill pile in search of her preferred meal. Whether this is endearing, annoying, or just plain amusing depends on the witness. This odd kitty's second favorite food is bird (species doesn't matter, but brighter or softer feathers are a plus), and she considers it an acceptable substitute when she can't find an egg-laden fish in the pile. At least then she gets some soft feathers for her or her patients' nests. Her third favorite food is a tie between most fish and reptiles, but she'll take the reptiles over the fish in most cases because they are a rarer find.
~~~Otterheart collects shells and bones (typically skulls and ribs). Any of these that she can find are cleaned, left in the sun a while to dry, and then taken into her den. Sometimes she'll lay them around her nest as decoration, but other times she migt choose a particular trophy to hold down or mark a pile of herbs. Rarely, if she thinks it makes a safe toy, she might donate one of her finds to the nursery.
~~~Around 28 moons ago, a young pregnant she-cat went out for a swim. As she was playing in the river, the wind picked up and began to lap at the water, forming waves that pushed her underwater. She fought, but she wasn't used to the weight of the kits in her belly and couldn't reach the surface again. She could very easily have died, but something collided with her, pushing her up to the surface and toward the shore. The something pulled her onto the riverbank just as her mate and his fishing patrol spotted her and rushed to her aid, and then it dove back under the waves and out of sight. She would later find out that it had been an otter that saved her from drowning. She never knew whether the otter was sent from StarClan, helping her for its own reasons, or just trying to get her off its territory, but she was grateful to it all the same and vowed at that moment to name one of her kits in its honor. And that's where Otterheart got her prefix.
~~~Otterheart's always been a very devout believer of StarClan. This belief kept her happy as a kit, knowing she had a brother that was watching over her from the stars. Even now, the knowledge that those that have passed on still exist happily helps to comfort her in her darkest times.
~~~It's a secret she will take with her to the grave, but Otterheart was in love with the former medicine cat. She did her best to make sure it didn't show and nothing ever came of it because she knew it could never really happen, but she always imagined the two of them as mates, and took his passing hard until he started appearing in her dreams. She knows it's not likely, but she has a secret hope that they can be together in StarClan, with their medicine cat duties mostly behind them.
History: Otterkit was born to a she-cat named Rainblossom alongside a stillborn brother named Rootkit. As the only surviving kit, it can be said that she was rather spoiled. Both her mother and Oakleaf - her father - gave her all the attention they could and did their best to provide her with her favorite foods and the softest moss the apprentices managed to gather that day - when the other queens and elders didn't raise a fuss over it. This would change within a few months when new kits were born to the clan and their mother insisted on the best of everything, but Otterkit didn't mind. She was happy to finally have friends close-ish to her age to play with, since her littermate was stuck in StarClan and couldn't come visit her. Her parents and many of the older apprentices and warriors would play with her, but it just wasn't the same.
The younger kits grew and it seemed Otterkit would finally have playmates her age and close enough to her own size. Except...once the kits were old enough to play, they didn't want to include her. There were three of them, and they thought four participants in any game was too many, and Otterkit was too old for them anyway. The kit didn't take the rejection well and sulked around the camp. Her parents and even the parents of the younger kits tried to comfort her, but nothing worked until Reedtail - the medicine cat - started spending time with her, talking to her about StarClan after learning of her interest in her warrior ancestors. The two bonded over their faith and became good friends. Once Otterkit became Otterpaw and was apprenticed to a warrior named Fernwhisker, she made sure she was the one that got to bring Reedtail fresh most and food and she was the one to volunteer whenever he needed an extra set of jaws to help him gather herbs.
A couple moons later, it became obvious that Otterheart was not cut out to be a warrior. She brought back far less prey than the other apprentices. She displayed her battle moves well enough on moss and sticks, but could never pull them off when practicing against another cat. She had the theory down, but something in her mind was blocking her from mastering the skills she was being taught. The other apprentices and even some of the meaner warriors started to tease her, and many took bets on when she'd leave the clan to become a kittypet. After all, what good could she possibly be? Even she seemed to agree with this, as she regressed a bit into kithood and play became the most important part of her life instead of training. At the same time, though, her knowledge of herbs was growing fast and her interest in StarClan grew ever stronger. StarClan eventually sent Reedtail a dream where he watched an otter play in a starlit river, but the dream wasn't needed. He'd already figured out what he had to do. He talked to the leader the very next morning, and Otterpaw became his apprentice, leaving behind the slim chance she had of ever becoming a warrior, mate, and mother and embracing the power of healing and secrets of StarClan. There was a tiny bit of regret in this, as it had always been her plan to find a mate and become a mother just as her own mother had done, but time made this dashed dream easier to bear.
Moons passed, and life turned around for Otterpaw. She was still horrible at hunting and fighting, but talented with herbs and compassionate even under stress. This earned her the respect of many of those who ahd teased her. There were still mean cats that belittled her, but as time went on and more and more cats started to treat her kindly, those mean cats stopped mattering and Otterpaw was happy with her place in life. She and Reedtail continued to grow loser, becoming inseperable. More time passed, and finally - one clear half-moon - Otterpaw's ceremony took place. It was the best day of her life - both of her meals had been egg-carrying fish, her StarClan dream was her first ever meeting with her brother, and she recieved her name from her best friend, surrounded by all the other medicine cats of the time. Otterheart slept soundly beside her mentor that night, repeating her first ever conversation with her littermate in her dreams and eagerly awaiting the next time she'd get to see him.
Nearly a full turn of the seasons passed in relative peace with nothing noteworthy occuring in her life. After that point, though, a bout of greencough infected many cats in the camp. Both medicine cats worked hard to save everyone and keep them alive, and they nearly succeeded. Unfortunately, Reedtail caught greencough himself, and it ontinued to get worse despite Otterheart's best efforts. Reedtail eventually died, leaving his grieving former apprentice with the entire weight of the clan on her shoulders. She can function, and even has happy days, but she has yet to get over Reedtail's death, and seeing him in her dreams is only a temporary relief.
